Traffic vs. Trust: What we learned launching a small Google Ads campaign
The Project
I recently teamed up with a local business owner and friend to help him promote his private jewelry studio through Google Ads. Because he hadn't used the platform before, I helped him set up his first campaign. We decided to manage it together for two months to see how the market would respond and gather some baseline data.
To put that into perspective, an average Google Ads click-through rate is usually around 2-3%. Hitting 9% was incredible—it indicated the jewelry strongly resonated with potential customers and the ads were very effective. The real insight came from the two inquiries we received. One caller, in particular, asked enough hesitant questions to signal a lack of trust. It became our biggest clue: the ads were driving the right traffic, but the website experience wasn't quite projecting the credibility people need before buying custom jewelry.
The Data
We gathered a lot of great data over those two months, but two contrasting metrics really helped narrow our focus for the next steps.
What We Learned
With a clear picture, he made the right call to pause the Google Ads campaign to protect his budget—a move I completely agreed with. So we then focused our attention on two practical areas that would build the trust his website was missing:
Google Business Profile Optimization: We updated and polished his profile with accurate details and clean, new photos, to help give potential customers a familiar, trusted place on Google to verify that the business is active and legitimate.
Refreshed Website Layout: We built a simple, welcoming landing page for the ads to quickly share information, build trust, and make contact easy. This new layout also gives us a practical style template we can apply to his most important pages in the short term, while he evaluates a larger website redesign later on when he has more time to focus on it.
